Modern Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) mortar is significantly harder than the sandstone and limestone used in Lancaster's Victorian and Georgian buildings. When it is used to repoint a soft-stone chimney, several problems follow:
Moisture trapping. Cement is impermeable. Moisture that would previously have migrated out through lime mortar joints is now trapped in the masonry. In Lancaster's climate, with sustained rainfall and freeze-thaw cycling every winter, that trapped moisture expands and contracts repeatedly within the stone. The cement joint holds firm. The stone face spalls — breaks away in sheets — as the frost acts on the moisture trapped behind the impermeable repointing.

Cracks appear in the stone face rather than in the joint. Stone cracks are irreversible without replacement. Mortar cracks are a maintenance item.
Damage that is invisible until it's severe. The initial cement repointing often looks clean and professional. The damage develops behind the surface over 5–15 years before it becomes visible as spalling stone faces, hollow sections, or structural movement in the stack.
Press a nail or penknife tip into the mortar joint of your chimney from a ladder. Lime mortar will yield slightly — you'll leave a small mark. Cement mortar is hard and will not yield to hand pressure. If you can hear a hollow sound when you tap the mortar joints, the bond has already failed beneath the surface.
What Lime Mortar to Specify in Lancaster
Not all lime mortars are the same. For chimney repointing on Lancaster's Victorian sandstone stacks, the correct specification is typically a Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 2 or NHL 3.5) mixed with sharp sand in a 1:2.5 or 1:3 ratio. The hydraulic lime sets by hydration as well as carbonation, giving it adequate initial strength for external use while maintaining the vapour permeability and flexibility that makes it appropriate for this masonry type.
